The Best Celebrity Outfits of 2022, According to Vogue Editors

The Best Celebrity Outfits of 2022 According to Vogue Editors

Celebrity fashion in 2022 was all about experimentation and maximal impact. On almost every red carpet was an array of eye-catching, tweet-sparking runway looks and coveted vintage pieces. Who can forget when Rihanna announced her pregnancy by wearing vintage Chanel and bared her belly in frigid temperatures? Or when Timothée Chalamet broke tradition by wearing a blazer sans shirt to the Oscars?

Even more minimalist movie stars had their fun too. While promoting his action comedy film Bullet Train, Brad Pitt ditched cookie-cutter Brioni suits for an unexpected linen skirt and top on the red carpet—proving how increasingly loose and fun black tie is becoming. Meanwhile, Emma Corrin and Taylor Russell have become breakout stars through their powerful on-screen performances and conversation-starting red carpet looks in equal measure.

Especially when guided by prolific stylists like Law Roach, Wayman and Micah, and Harry Lambert celebrities have become style savants in their own right. The next year of celebrity fashion is likely to see even more creative risks and carefully studied and sourced vintage pieces.

Below, Vogue editors reflect on the exciting year of daring red carpet looks and nominate some of their favorite moments.

Timothée Chalamet Ditches the Black Tie (and Shirt) at the Oscars
One could say that Timothée Chalamet “broke the internet” when he arrived at the 2022 Academy Awards earlier this year. The actor showed up in an ensemble from Louis Vuitton’s spring 2022 womenswear collection, wearing nothing but a few layered necklaces underneath a black sequin blazer. Although this was his inaugural shirtless red carpet appearance, this wasn’t the first time Chalamet stunned the masses in a bedazzled Louis Vuitton piece. Back in 2019, the star attended the Golden Globes in a Louis Vuitton look that featured a sparkling harness, which also became an instant fan-favorite. It’s clear that Chalamet’s love for taking fashion risks will continue to bring us major red carpet moments for quite some time, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for next year.

Blake Lively’s Met Gala 2022 Gown Has Already Withstood the Test of Time
When Blake Lively unwrapped her Versace gown at this year’s Met Gala to reveal a long, “patinated” train, I was almost giddy. The dress—which was inspired by the Statue of Liberty—made for the perfect dramatic red carpet moment. And isn’t that what the Met Gala is all about?

Rihanna’s Pregnancy Fashion Was a Tour De Force
It’s really tough to pick favorites from Rihanna’s many stellar pregnancy looks. She started so strong with that pink vintage Chanel reveal and still managed to raise the bar with every new outfit. Still, this Gucci look she wore to the brand’s show back in February a few weeks after the announcement is outstanding in its audacity. I mean, when have you ever seen latex maternity wear? It really is subversive chic at its best. Plus, who else could rock a Joan of Arc-style headpiece with the ease of a fitted cap?

Taylor Russell—Star of a Cannibal Love Story—Ate on the Red Carpet
A star is born! I don’t think anyone else has made my heart sing with fashion like my girl Taylor Russell has this year. She’s been spot-on during the press tour for her role in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones & All. But it’s not just the impeccable taste of her stylist, Ryan Hastings, that has elevated Russell as one of this year’s best-dressed starlets in my eyes. It’s also the way she wears fashion. She embodies each look she wears—almost like it’s a character. This Schiaparelli look to me is the perfect example of the star’s brilliant approach. The way she looks out from under the wide brim of her hat; her poised yet mysterious stillness in that insanely cinched corset. This is a person that not only loves fashion, but also understands it. Taylor Russell gets it.

Robert Pattinson Transitions from the Batsuit to the Oversized Suit
This year has been the second coming of Robert Pattinson, especially after the world collectively lost its mind when his February 2022 GQ cover came out. Following that immense success, Pattinson continued to serve it up at every single The Batman premiere in oversized suit after oversized suit. In my opinion, the heathered gray Jil Sander suit he wore to the film’s London premiere, accessorized with the same chunky jewelry he sported on his GQ cover, was his standout look of the year. I'm now anticipating the next Batman movie to come out so we can see more of our favorite superhero on the red carpet.

Lil Nas X Brings Queer Black Boy Joy to the MTV Video Music Awards
I’ve absolutely loved watching Lil Nas X’s fashion blossom in accordance with the increasingly larger-than-life and confident persona he chooses to share with the world. The musician typically skews towards camp with his red carpet looks, once donning a neon-green Christopher John Rogers ensemble worthy of a Batman villain. Which is why it felt refreshing to see him adopt a more sleek approach to the Video Music Awards’ black carpet in August. The dramatic, sculptural look is the product of British designer Harris Reed and features an oversized headpiece that calls to mind the radiant halos prominent in a number of High Renaissance paintings. The star added a healthy dose of attitude to the get-up: he showed off his chiseled and luminous upper half with supreme confidence, a smirk on his face. The haute couture moment is a holy vision of queer black boy joy.

Jodie Turner-Smith Becomes a Piece of Art
Jodie Turner-Smith had an extremely stylish run at the Venice Film Festival, so it’s hard to pick a best gown from her week of looks. But this colorful Christopher John Rogers gown with a flowing train that the actor wore to the amfAR Venice Gala felt like it was made for her. From the timeless silhouette to the punchy hues, it's a design that belongs in a museum—it's wearable art.

Oscar Isaac’s Thom Browne Skirt Is Uniform Chic
The Thom Browne skirt was one of the most popular and reliably delightful pieces in celebrity men’s fashion this year. It’s a sign of how expansive menswear is becoming. A red carpet skirt on a male-presenting body is no longer a political statement and instead just a great ’fit. (This comes with caveats, of course.)

I can think of no better men’s skirt moment this year than the great Oscar Issac donning a Thom Browne blazer and pleated skirt while promoting Disney’s Moon Knight. What I love is how the star is wearing the skirt and the skirt is not wearing him. The look is kept grounded and slightly rugged with the addition of hefty black boots and boyish striped socks, lending a British countryside prep school feel to the ensemble. And let me be clear: I would happily become a studious pupil at Oscar Isaac’s Academy for Supreme Fits.

There’s Nothing Funny About Meg Stalter’s Emmys Outfit
I was so obsessed with Megan Stalter’s look at the 2022 Emmys (her very first!). Her sheer red lace Norma Kamali slip—layered over visible Cuup underwear that were color-customized by her stylist Kat Typaldos—was the antithesis of boring. She looked beautiful, unique, and ready for the afterparty.

Zendaya Is Regal in Valentino Black
It's hard to make a black gown memorable, but Zendaya’s full-skirted Valentino frock totally stole the show at this year’s Emmys, where she won for lead actress in Euphoria. It was Old Hollywood style at its finest—though on her, it read as totally modern and fresh. That Bulgari necklace didn't hurt either.

Lewis Hamilton Mixes and Matches Issey Miyake
Yes, I too have been racer-pilled thanks to Netflix's Drive to Survive series. But the fact remains that Lewis Hamilton is easily one of the best dressed men of 2022. He certainly wore more over-the-top and opulent fits this year, and I just loved the ease of this all-pleat combo and the color palette of beige and dusty pink that signals, “I’m here fully vibing.” It made me immediately want to recreate the outfit for myself and also my husband.

Bones & All Star Taylor Russell Nails Red Carpet Denim
Sure, Taylor Russell isn’t at the Oscars (yet!) but I love her high-low casual moment at the Gotham Awards. She’s wearing the über glam Tom Ford-era Gucci fur bolero from spring 2004, but she’s offering up a casual contrast with her jeans and strappy heels. It reminds me of those early aughts red carpets, when the celebrity’s looks felt less curated and more like a mood

Dua Lipa Wears White to a Wedding
Do not invite Dua Lipa to your wedding! That is, unless you are absolutely secure in yourself and comfortable with someone other than you going viral for their outfit. The singer showed up to the wedding of Simon Porte Jacquemus and his partner, Marco Maestri,  wearing a customized version of the celebrated designer’s runway creations. The sheer, breezy look is perfectly suited to the South of France’s balmy locale and Lipa wears it with supreme confidence. This was not the singer’s only viral wedding moment of the year either. She also sparked a frenzy when she wore fresh-off-the-runway pieces from Bottega Veneta’s spring 2023 collection to another pal’s wedding earlier in the year. I love it. The ethos of never dimming your shine, even for a moment, is something we can all harness for ourselves. When I invite guests to my wedding, I am going to encourage them to go for it in the spirit of Ms. Lipa—no holds, or colors, barred.

Luca Guadagnino Embraces Dadcore in Loewe
I absolutely loved Luca in head-to-toe Loewe at the photocall in Venice, right before the premiere of his latest film Bones & All. He was wearing a puffed up, slightly distressed polo shirt paired with acid-wash jeans and puffy sneakers. Posing next to Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell, he looked like such a proud dad, beaming with joy and dressing the part of paternal creative—only he was wearing one of today’s most celebrated designers while doing so.

Tessa Thompson Flips the Script at the Venice Film Festival

In my eyes, Tessa Thompson was the best dressed person this year. But as a jury member at the Venice International Film Festival, she shone from the second she arrived in the city wearing a sheer Victoria Beckham tunic, black pants, and red gloves (!). This energy was only amplified on the red carpet. My personal favorites are the moody black and white Schiaparelli she wore to the closing red carpet; the sultry black hooded netted Interior dress, blunt bob, and choker she selected for the Blonde premiere; and the otherworldly Marc Jacobs mint green confection she donned for the premiere of Don't Worry Darling. Each is theatrical and dramatic, but has the artistic bent of a true fashion lover. Props to Thompson and stylist team Wayman and Micah; these will be on my mood board forever.

Model Anok Goes For It at Vanity Fair’s Oscars After-Party
Listen. I know that when it comes to a model of Anok’s caliber, every look will be a hit. But this one, created by Belgian fashion designer Olivier Theyskens, was particularly special to me. Styled by the great Carlos Nazario, a frequent Vogue contributor, the ensemble was such a perfect but unexpected choice for Anok. It’s a maxi bodycon dress, so it worked well for an evening event. But the white patchwork construction made the look such a unique choice for an exclusive, industry event where stars typically turn to luscious fabrics and sleek styling. I also absolutely love what Theyskens has been up to these past few seasons. The brand’s dresses are absolutely haunting. And you can almost feel and see the creative hands behind them, a welcome contrast to how industrial so much of fashion feels today.

Hollywood Frontman Timothée Chalamet Goes Backless
In terms of Hollywood men, Timothée Chalamet is one of the boldest risk takers on the red carpet, and he certainly didn’t disappoint when he showed up to the Bones and All premiere in Venice wearing Haider Ackermann's red backless halter top. It was one of the week’s most unexpected style moments—and he totally pulled it off with heartthrob flair.
