In a post to her Instagram, FKA twigs has revealed her ongoing struggle with fibroid tumors.

Fibroid tumors are a common condition, effecting as many as 80% of those who have a period. The exact cause of fibroid tumors is unknown, and they're almost always benign (not cancerous), according to the Office on Women's Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Symptoms accompanying fibroids can range in severity, and those with tumors may experience heavy or long menstrual periods, abnormal bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and frequent urination.

FKA twigs shared that she had six fibroid tumors and made the decision to have them removed. She explained the medical procedure she underwent, writing: "I am a very private person as u all know and I have gone back and forth in my mind whether to share that this year I have been recovering from laparoscopic surgery to remove 6 fibroid tumors from my uterus." She went on to share that the tumors were "pretty huge," describing them as two the size of cooking apples, three the size of kiwis, and a "couple" the size of strawberries. "A fruit bowl of pain everyday," she wrote. "The nurse said that the weight and size was like being 6 months pregnant."

The performer also said that the pain was "excruciating" and she feared the impact the fibroids could have on her body. "I had surgery in December and I was so scared, despite lots of love from friends and family I felt really alone and my confidence as a woman was knocked," she wrote. And while she had previously struggled with recovery, FKA twigs shared the moment that it all changed, pointing to the Instagram video accompanying her caption. "Today whilst dancing...I felt like my strong self again for the first time in a while and it was magical. Thank you precious body for healing, thank you for reminding me to be kind to myself, you are a wonderful thing, now go create and be other once again."

She finished the post with a message to other followers who "suffer from fibroid tumors," writing: "You are amazing warriors and that you are not alone. You can get through this."

According to the Mayo Clinic, people with fibroids have a number of treatment options, including medication, hormonal therapy, and in some cases, surgery. If you experience any of the symptoms associated with fibroids, it's best to speak with a trusted healthcare professional or an adult.
