Mia Wasikowska On 'Piercing,' Watching Horror Films, Working With Mia Hansen-Løve & More [Interview] - Page 2 of 2

Have you had a chance to see the final product yet?
Yeah. I have. And it’s very disturbing [laughter]. It’s easier, even though it sounds weird, to act in a film like this than to watch it. For me, anyway, because I probably wouldn’t be the first in line to go and see [it]. I’m not good with horror and violence. But to play it was just so fun. It’s crazy to see how it all came together.

I can imagine. We get the notion that, for Christopher’s character, Reed, this is a twisted journey of self-discovery. Jackie’s path is decidedly darker and more mysterious. How would you describe her journey and what ultimately motivates her along the way?
They’re both really troubled people. There’s no obvious backstory for Jackie, and there is for Reed in that sense that you get a little insight to maybe some of the trauma he suffered as a child. It raised an interesting question. In one way, you could see him as a clear psychopath, and in another way, it’s questionable as to whether he’s had this trauma that’s very similar to what he thinks he wants or needs now. And it’s hard to know whether he’d actually really go through with that. The same could be said for Jackie, but it’s hard to know. They’re both very damaged, but, in a way, they get sweeter towards each other. And then at the very end when [he] took her out eating, first, you kind of wonder whether they’re just going to go through this cycle again, and again, and again.

You worked with some skilled directors in your films coming out this year including, Mia Hansen-Løve. What was your experience like working with her on “Bergman Island?”
Oh, it was great. I loved Mia. I had a great time on that film, and I think the story is brilliant. And we got to be on the island that Bergman shot most of his films on. It was very much a tribute to him and his work, but Mia’s version and reflection on it. It was really cool. I’m very excited about that film.

I’m looking forward to it. Your upcoming film, “The Devil All The Time,” reunites you with Robert Pattinson and boasts an incredible cast. Can you speak a bit about your character and how she fits into the larger story?
Yeah. It’s an amazing, Southern Gothic script. I play a really unusual character, but it follows three generations of people. You see this generational trauma, and patterns, and things repeating themselves. And I love Tony [Campos], the director, who was the producer on “Piercing.” So, I’m really excited about working with him again.

Has there been any recent news on a potential “Alice in Wonderland” sequel?
No, not that I’m aware of. No. I’d be surprised, but I’m not sure if that’s a thing or not.

“Piercing” hits theaters and VOD platforms on February 1, 2019. You can watch the Red Band trailer below:
