Beau Is Afraid is the third feature film written and directed by Ari Aster, after his feature film debut, 2018's Hereditary and 2019's Midsommar.
The film follows Phoenix's title character Beau Wassermann, whose life is turned upside down after the sudden death of his mother (Patti LuPone).
Beau, described as a, 'mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man,' must confront his darkest fears as, 'he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home.'
Aster had been developing the feature film for many years, with one of his short films, 2011's Beau, inspiring a sequence in the feature film.
The filmmaker has described the project as a 'nightmare comedy' and a 'Jewish Lord of the Rings but he's just going to his mom's house.'
The film cost $35 million and is said to be indie distributor A24's most expensive film to date.
